2015-16 Curriculum

So I have made a few changes this year but most things are staying course.  Here is our tentative plan. 

Family Morning Time or Afternoon time (during winter months)

Here is the schedule on what we cover each morning planning one hour each morning/afternoon.  If weather is nice we go outside and work for about an hour on the following while my 4 yr. old plays outside.  Works out well!  The Bible reading is to be done prior to meeting and we just discuss it. Hymns are one every 6 wks., poets, composers, Shakespeare, and artists are every 12 weeks. Did not list all the books in each grade list but you can see what we use on the chart.:

Lunch Read Alouds:  Story Book of Science & Fabre’s Insects   Tues., Thurs. & Friday

                                       (life has been busy this year ended up like 1-2x month)
Science experiments are weekly on Tuesday using:  Adventures with a Microscope, Physics Lab in a Housewares Store, Physics Lab in a Hardware Store & Backyard Ballistics




Pre-K  

Taking a more relaxed approach and trying to let him be a kid.  :)  We are only planning on about 30 min. of actual "work" where we are sitting at the table.  Not counting reading.  It will be broken up but are mostly working on some math, phonics, and writing.  The rest of the day he will play and is able to hang out with brothers during morning group time.  Reading will happen throughout the day morning, lunch, rest time, before bedtime.  Music, art, and Spanish are incorporated through out the day but not "officially" taught.  The lists always seem more hefty then they really are.  


Bible- Golden Children's Bible reading through and working through AWANA

Phonics- The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Reading (he is already reading so we are starting with special sounds and continuing on from there.  Readers:  Bob Books, Primary Phonics, some of Memoria Press K and Hooked on Phonics readers cause I had them.  :)    Also working on Reading Eggs online
Writing - Just a few times a week working on writing letters correctly

Math - After much deliberation we are going to try Singapore.  Starting at 1A he is passed the kindergarten books so we plan on going slow.  Also working on CTC online and mainly focusing on math games!  Here is a great site:  Kidscount1234

Science/History- Just readers - God is Good series (Rod and Staff), Memoria Press K curriculum + readers, misc. list will post list at the end of the year.

Spanish - Memorizing songs (Lyric Language Spanish) and working through Cherrydale Press (Speaking Spanish With Ms. Mason)

Memory work - Memoria Press K

Fine Arts - will try to do some with Memoria Press K enrichment but mostly will just tag along with brothers

Art- taking at the local coop

Piano - hope to begin working on this some this year:  My First Piano Adventure


7th Grade

This will look like a very long list but we are going by time on all subjects working with me this year so if we don't get done we will just move it to the next day.  Not all subjects are done every day.  Will try to link his schedule.

Latin I-  online at Landry Academy using Latin Alive 1 (this going great love the teacher!!)

Other readings-  How to Read a Book (parts), Fallacy Detective

Life skills - working on note taking and organizational skills this year along with doing own laundry and working through this book mostly when we have time and weekends:  The Young Man's Handybook:  Preparing your Son on the Homefront

Coop classes:  Debate (using BJU materials) and Drama

PE - been doing his own weight training and outdoor program (5x week)

Violin - private lessons continuing on

Current Events- will be reading and writing a summary of the events of the week

Science - Physics - w/ DerekOwens.com & following books E=m2, Napoleon's Buttons, Six Easy Pieces and parts of Microbe Hunters.  Labs will be done as a family biweekly with lab write ups

Math- Pre-Calculus w/ Derekowens.com  also reviewing Algebra and Geometry concepts with CTC review, Euclid Elements (Bk 1 & 2)

Drill - (no workbooks just memorization and working through)  Vocabulary from Classical Roots Bk. C, Poem of choice 3 for the year, Geography drills (world 2x wk), Scripture memory:  Psalm 100, Gal. 5:22-26, Rom. 8:28-39, Romans Road, Beatitudes, Psalm 23

Grammar- Sentence Skills w/Reading (reviewing topics) (1x week), Dictation 2x week  (Basically just reviewing what he has already learned and staying fresh)

Writing-   DE class at Bluefield College (price is right and so are trying a few classes this year to see how we like it.  :)  (Did really well and seemed to like it.  Rigor pretty good.) Also reading through:  On Writing Well, Classic Rhetoric (used last year but going through this year at a slower rate and reviewing what was learned)

Latin 4/ Latin Readings-  taking online at Wilson Hill Academy (Using Latin Alive 4)

Other readings-  How to Read a Book (parts), Fallacy Detective

Music Appreciation - DE  Bluefield College (took this summer) 

Life Skills:  Driver's Ed- (can't believe he is this old!  Will be doing online book learning through: driversed.com and doing driving with Mom and Dad before applying for his license in the summer) also reading:  Make it Stick and 90 Minute College Major (career planning)

Health/PE- Total Health and exercise for 4x week for 20min.

Guitar - plays in 3 different bands (High School band at church, and a special event band and fills in about once a month on Sunday mornings for the adult band)
